Steve Kennedy brought home the winning catch for the Georgia Elite Series on West Point Lake in May 2011. Friends we know said Steve had been had been excited ever since West Point Lake was announced as a stop on the 2011 Georgia Elite Series – called the Pride of Georgia.
Steve learned West Point Lake – fishing on it as a youngster with his brother and father. He grew up in Georgia and now calls Auburn, Ala home.
He said “I didn’t own a swimbait back when I competed in 2005, so a swimbait was a new addition.” He used two swimbait models — one a “no-name” model out of production, the other a Basstrix. “I’d get them to swim out and show themselves. On a clear lake like this, I can see what’s there, what size of fish is on the structure,” he said. If he liked was he saw, skipped a watermelon-seed Kinami Flash to get the strike.
“It almost looked like a little baitfish skipping on top of the water,” he said – using a skipping technique. “Then I just let it settle and let the line lay there — I call it ‘flylining’. I used mono so it lays on top of the water, and I watched for it to start swimming.” His method was to let a bass pick up the Flash and swim out of the cover before setting the hook.
Kennedy put down the gossip during Pride of Georgia practice days that the bass were scarce, skittish and hard to catch. Kennedy said he found plenty of big ones during practice.
He won $100,000 and a place in the 2012 Bassmaster Classic for his second Bassmaster title.
