Development offers lake living, city experiences

from the LaGrange Daily News (GA)
David Miller Staff writer
Published: September 16, 2011

Hardman Knox discovered LaGrange in June 2010. More than a year later, he is trying to share his discovery of LaGrange and West Point Lake with others. Knox is manager of a real estate group called West Point Lake Development, LLC. His group owns and operates Retreat on West Point Lake: a 479-acre, gated residential community on eight miles of shoreline of the lake. Ken Breland is Director of Sales and Marketing for Retreat and is the broker for the company. “We’re lucky because we’re on West Point Lake,” Breland said. “West Point Lake is a special place in Georgia. It offers over 26,000 acres of clean water and some of the best fishing in the country for bass, striper, hybrid, crappie and bream.” Located 12 miles from Lafayette Square, Retreat also offers residents an opportunity to experience the life of downtown LaGrange. “This is a great place to keep a lake home,” Breland said. Each home site is on a lot of at least an acre. When sites are purchased, the owners can select their own builders and architects and build on their own schedule. “We just ask homeowners to meet certain design guidelines,” Breland said. “There are just a few basic criteria for the outdoor finish and look.” Phase One of the building process included completion of 75 home sites. The master plan calls for no more than 228 home sites.

Each home site includes a deeded boat slip on a community dock. Breland said the slips are on “big water,” which means that all slips will have lake access, even in the winter when lake levels are at their lowest. Retreat also offers more than 770 acres of forest to explore. Homeowner and boat slip fees are less than $1, 000. For more information, visit www.retreatwpl.com

Fishing the Georgia DNR Websites

Georgia Department of Natural ResourcesThe Georgia Department of Natural Resources has a fantastic website where you’ll find information about hunting seasons, fishing locations, wildlife viewing opportunities, boating safety, educational programs and more. You can even learn how to get involved and support wildlife conservation efforts right here in Georgia. It’s an incredibly useful site featuring maps and a great calendar.

eRegulations Georgia Sport FishingAnd if that isn’t enough they’ve teamed up with the folks at J.F. Griffin to produce a digital magazine with all the 2011 Georgia Regulations for Sport Fishing. It contains everything from licensing to identifying all local fish.

Fire and Flavor Grilling at Retreat

Davis Knox was in town to visit with his brother Hardman (Retreat’s Manager) and enjoy an evening of friendly conversation and relaxation at Retreat. When talking to Davis it’s clear he shares the Knox family tradition of land stewardship and passion for the outdoors. I was talking with him about the interesting feature in Southern Living’s Backyard Retreats on Casual Cookouts. He mentioned how he hopes the recipes and flavors from one of his other passions – Fire and Flavor Grilling Company will be a big part of the Retreat’s lifestyle.

Davis and Gena DavisDavis and wife Gena started their Georgia based business Fire and Flavor in 2003. Their product line includes grilling planks, grilling papers, skewers, rubs and brines…and, as always, everything is all natural and big on flavor. Their business mission is to develop, promote and sell simple, all natural products that impart delicious flavor and make cooking enjoyable. I recommend you take time to enjoy their wonderful grilling products.

Late August and fish are biting on West Point Lake!

Retreat resident Joey Mines knows where the fish are for sure. He and his fishing protégé Ken Breland (pictured here) were out on West Point Lake today with Retreat’s Hardman Knox.  The weather was absolutely perfect as we left the marina just at sunrise and headed toward the south end of the lake and then later to Yellow Jacket Creek.
Knowing that the water was warm (86 degrees) Joey had us using a “drop shot” to catch Crappie. Normally, this is a bass fishing technique. He reminded us that when the water temperature is warm like it is in August the fish bite a lot less, and you have to give them a chance to study the bait. The “drop shot” allows the fish to take a hard look at the bait and then go after it. No doubt, Joey’s warm water secret tip was ideal for today’s conditions and the key to getting into the Crappie. We came home with plenty of nice filets for frying, and the wives will sure enjoy it when we use Joey’s special recipe to cook those filets this evening for dinner!
Wow, what great time! And we’ll know to modify our technique next time we go fishing in cooler water because the fish will be active – moving shallow, chasing lures, and aggressively biting.
